Getting Ahead of Network Issues

Networks rarely fail suddenly — the warning signs come first. What proactive network monitoring looks like and why it turns outages into scheduled maintenance.

Nothing is worse than discovering the network is down at the same moment your whole team does. Too often, IT lacks the visibility to get ahead of performance issues — you're in the dark until something is wrong. It doesn't have to work that way.

Why networks fail "suddenly"

They almost never do. Switches log errors for weeks before a port dies. Internet connections degrade before they drop. Access points strain under load long before users complain. Firewall hardware runs hot before it fails. The warning signs exist — the question is whether anyone is watching for them.

What getting ahead looks like

  • Watch the devices everything depends on. Modems, firewalls, switches, and access points — when a core device has an issue, someone should know before the users do.
  • Alert on degradation, not just failure. Up/down alerts are table stakes. Throughput drops, interface errors, and health metrics catch problems while they're still invisible to users.
  • Know whose problem an outage is. When the internet slows, real-time data settles the “is it us or the provider?” question in minutes — with evidence your ISP can't wave away.
  • Route alerts to people who act. Monitoring that emails an unwatched inbox is decoration. Alerts should land with a help desk that opens a ticket and starts working.
  • Tune it to your environment. Generic thresholds produce noise; noise gets ignored; ignored alerts are how outages happen anyway.

The payoff

Organizations with proactive monitoring don't have fewer component failures — hardware is hardware. What they have is fewer outages, because failing parts get replaced on a scheduled afternoon instead of during a Monday morning scramble. Issues become tickets; tickets get resolved; your team mostly never knows.

That's exactly how AIS Network Monitoring works: purpose-built monitoring for your core network devices, configured to your environment, with alerts routed straight to our in-house help desk. It's included in Shield+ and Total Shield+. If your network's health is currently a mystery, let's fix that.
